Two slides can look nearly identical and feel completely different, and the reason is almost always the material. The big divide in casual footwear is EVA foam versus rubber. One is light and cushioned; the other is dense and hard-wearing. Neither is "better" in the abstract — they're built for different priorities. This is a plain, honest breakdown of what each is, how they differ, and what our footwear is made of, so you know what you're actually buying.
What EVA foam actually is
EVA — ethylene-vinyl acetate — is the light, springy foam behind most modern recovery slides and running-shoe midsoles. It's very light, cushions well, and is naturally waterproof because it doesn't absorb water. That combination is why it dominates the comfort footwear category.
The recovery-grade version goes a step further. Instead of a single plain block of foam, a high-rebound sole is engineered to compress under each step and spring back rather than packing flat. Our CloudFoam™ sole is made from thousands of high-elastic foam granules fused into one piece, for cushioning that keeps working far longer than basic EVA.
What rubber brings — and its trade-offs
Rubber is denser, heavier and more abrasion-resistant. It grips well and lasts, which is why it's the classic material for outsoles and old-school flip-flops. If maximum toughness underfoot were the only goal, rubber would be an easy pick.
The trade-offs are weight and comfort. Rubber is much heavier than foam — noticeable over a long day when you're lifting your shoes thousands of times — and a solid rubber sole is firmer, with far less of the soft, cushioned give that makes recovery footwear feel the way it does. It's tough, but it's not plush.
The honest catch with foam: heat
EVA foam's one real weakness is heat. High-rebound recovery foam is heat-sensitive: direct sun, a hot car dashboard, a sunny windowsill or any hot surface can cause it to shrink or deform, and once it warps it doesn't come back. Rubber tolerates heat better on this specific point.
This is easy to manage — dry and store your foam pair in the shade, never in direct sun or on a hot surface — but it's worth being upfront about. Sun and heat damage isn't covered by returns or warranty, precisely because it's avoidable with a little care. We'd rather flag it loudly than have you learn it the hard way in an Indian summer.
What Fanture uses and why
Every Fanture style is built on a high-rebound EVA-based CloudFoam™ sole and an ArcFit™ footbed, because for recovery footwear the priorities are light weight, real cushioning and being fully waterproof — all things foam does well and rubber doesn't. At around 120 g per shoe in EU 42, the whole range is deliberately light.
You still get grip: the outsole uses a geometric non-slip tread with DryFlow™ drainage designed for wet floors, so choosing foam doesn't mean giving up traction.
